Private Club Spotlight

Since its beginning in 1990 with the management of Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, Troon has become an industry leader in golf course management, casting its worldwide net over destinations like Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, even Russia.

So when the highly regarded hospitality company was chosen by Lake Presidential Golf Club in Maryland to manage the property in 2019, it merely became an extension of the facility’s original vision to conduct its golf operation with a global focus. The leader in golf course management, development, and marketing, Troon is now entering its second season at Lake Presidential, implementing a number of new programs, including Troon Rewards, golf’s largest and most successful rewards program.

Located approximately 22 miles east of Washington, D.C., Lake Presidential Golf Club is part of the beautiful Beechtree Community. The course opened in 2008 and is one of Maryland’s most popular, having been named No. 3 on Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play in Maryland” list last year.

The stellar property features an 11,000-square-foot clubhouse highlighted by a golf shop and event facilities that can accommodate up to 275 guests. The Perch at Lake Presidential offers a beautiful setting for light grab-and-go meals or a cold beverage before or after your round.

The golf at Lake Presidential has always been superb. The 18-hole, par-72, 7,230-yard layout meanders through heavily wooded terrain and rich, natural expanses. Generous landing areas and five sets of tees make for a balanced test for golfers of all skill levels and a great venue for family golf. Playable green complexes, handsomely groomed playing surfaces, white-sand bunkers and picturesque streams round out the excitement.
The routing of the course was originally designed to be very diverse, and that has remained a constant through the years at Lake Presidential. There’s a good mix of left-to-right and right-to-left holes. There are fairway-level greens, elevated greens and greens set in recessed bowls. Some of the holes are open to the breeze, others are tucked between the woods. Overall, the course is a strategic marvel.

Among its remarkable holes is No. 8, the 570-yard, par 5 that requires an accurate tee shot through the trees to set up an approach to a narrow green guarded by bunkers and the course’s namesake lake. The 225-yard, par-3 ninth and risk-reward 515-yard, par-5 18th also play around the 30-acre Lake Presidential for a memorable finish to any round.

Great courses do not just evolve from great routings, but also are characterized by great greens. The putting surfaces at Lake Presidential attest to that, as they are moderately contoured, their sizes and shapes built specifically to match the strategic elements of each hole. The greens were created with moderate contour to keep them puttable even under fast conditions. Some have multiple tiers or false fronts. Many are tightly defended by bunkers. All the greens, however, have a generous gap or opening to allow players to bump-and-run their approach shots onto the putting surface.

In addition to the 18-hole championship golf course, the club offers a variety of amenities that include the clubhouse with its full-service pro shop and luxury locker rooms. The Golf Institute at Lake Presidential is a world-class training facility led by PGA Teaching Professional Damon Lucas. The Perch is a wonderful spot to share a drink or enjoy a sandwich with indoor and outdoor dining overlooking the 30-acre Lake Presidential and there’s also a private conference area with event and banquet space.
